What is competitive intelligence?

Competitive intelligence is the systematic process of legally and ethically gathering and analyzing publicly available data about your competitors and your market to discover potential risks and key opportunities. It is not about copying or undermining your rivals. It’s the exact opposite: to help you see your own unique advantages and how to differentiate yourself from the crowd.

It helps you make informed business decisions from sales strategies to investment priorities, and find solutions to a wide range of business challenges, such as how to close more clients, optimize your next marketing campaign, or plan for an M&A.

WHEN it's a must

Competitive intelligence is essential when you ....

Why it's safe and transparent

Competitive intelligence is not about corporate espionage or leaking any non-public information. You can be sure that no sensitive, private, or confidential data is used or gathered (including, but not limited to, trade secrets, know-how, etc). This applies to your company's internal data, as well as to your competitors' non-public data. Both are protected.

Although it goes without saying, it's also important to point out that no illegal or unethical methods are used (like data theft or corruptive practices) to collect information. Compliance is taken very seriously. This also means that your competitors (including their employees, clients, business partners etc.) will never be contacted. You can have peace of mind knowing that they won't be messaged, called, or interviewed – either directly or indirectly (e.g. through third parties) – and that only publicly available information will be used.

WHY it's non-negotiable

How does it apply in practice?

For instance, evaluating customer complaints in rival products or services helps your company build solutions that capture dissatisfied customers and build a loyal client base. When it comes to marketing, analyzing how your competitors communicate through different channels helps you create a unique and contrasting marketing message.

The same applies to sales and brand positioning. Providing your sales team with competitor vulnerabilities allows them to overcome objections during pitches and prepare in advance for strategic responses, while evaluating competitor price points helps your company position itself as a premium or affordable alternative.
